- The fire brigade responded to 38 calls across Cyprus over the past 24 hours as storms brought strong winds and heavy rain, leading to various incidents throughout the region.
In Nicosia, fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis reported that crews tackled four incidents involving fallen trees, a common issue as the severe weather swept through. The dangers of the storm were evident, with several vehicles damaged after trees collapsed onto them.
Limassol was particularly affected, with fire stations handling nine calls. Areas including Ayios Tychonas and Dora reported multiple incidents of fallen trees, and crews were also dispatched to secure sheets of metal blown loose by the wind.
The situation was similar in Paphos, where crews responded to four calls across Ayia Marina, Pomos, and Polis Chrysochous. Here, the team focused on removing fallen trees and addressing a collapsed shelter, with reports of vehicles sustaining damage from the storm.
In the Famagusta district, five additional calls were made for assistance in Protaras, Paralimni, Deryneia, and Xylofagou. Incidents included fallen trees and hazardous scaffolding, as well as restaurant and cafe signs that had been dislodged by the intense winds.
As the storms continued to disrupt daily life, police urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads. In a recent social media post, they advised motorists to reduce their speed, maintain safe distances, and keep headlights on due to the hazardous conditions.
The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds has led to a challenging environment for both emergency services and the public. As conditions remain unpredictable, the authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a quick return to normalcy.
