Justice Minister Costas Fytiris has announced that he will soon reveal measures aimed at improving conditions within the Central Prisons. This decision follows multiple visits to the facility where he has been assessing the current state and identifying necessary improvements.
Fytiris shared his intentions with journalists after a recent visit to the Limassol Police Directorate. He stated, “Soon I will be in a position to announce measures for the Central Prisons that will help improve the correctional facility.” His statements reflect a clear commitment to enhancing the prison environment.
The minister has made a total of three visits to the prisons and is scheduled to return for another inspection on Wednesday. These visits are part of his effort to understand the challenges faced by the facility and to formulate effective solutions. Fytiris emphasised the importance of first-hand observation, saying he wants to see what is really happening in the field.
During the discussions, he was questioned about the potential implementation of a mobile phone jamming system within the prison. He assured that the ministry will evaluate all options as they arise, promising, “Whatever problems exist, we will solve them, rest assured.” This commitment aims to address concerns regarding security and the management of inmate communication.
Fytiris also took the opportunity to express his satisfaction with the police directorates, acknowledging the challenging nature of their work. He praised both ordinary officers and senior ranks for their dedication and resilience, stating, “I will do what I can to promote requests concerning technology and solving issues, always in cooperation with the Chief.” His remarks highlight the collaborative efforts necessary for ensuring public safety.
When asked about the rising crime rates in Limassol, the minister reassured the public that authorities are committed to improving safety. He stated, “This is the goal and we will do whatever is necessary to achieve it.” This declaration reflects a proactive approach to community safety, aiming to ensure that residents feel secure at all times.
Fytiris likened the structure of the police force to a pyramid, with ordinary officers forming the foundation that supports the entire organisation. He conveyed his appreciation for recent investigations and the efforts made by police under a new programme issued by Police Headquarters, which has resulted in a significant increase in checks and investigations.
He concluded by reiterating his commitment to reducing crime and illegal activities, stating, “We will continue in this framework so that crime and illegal actions are reduced to a minimum.” This determination underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance both the prison system and overall public safety in Limassol.
