Youth Culture Card Expanded to Include Book Purchases in Cyprus

The Youth Culture Card now covers book purchases, enhancing opportunities for young people in Cyprus. The deputy ministry of culture announced this significant update on Friday, allowing cardholders aged 18 to 21 to buy books from any bookshop across the island.

In a statement, the deputy ministry expressed their commitment to supporting the youth: “We support young people by opening the doors to literature and knowledge, nurturing their love of reading.” This initiative aims to foster a deeper engagement with literature, complementing existing benefits that include tickets for concerts, theatre, films, festivals, art exhibitions, museums, and archaeological sites.

The Youth Culture Card holds a budget of €220 for cultural activities, with €200 provided by the government and €20 from the Bank of Cyprus. This financial backing is designed to alleviate any financial burdens young people may face when exploring cultural avenues.

“The inclusion of books enables young people to engage with reading and culture without financially burdening themselves or their families,” the deputy ministry added, highlighting the initiative’s dual focus on cultural enrichment and economic support for families.

Since its launch in 2024, the Youth Culture Card has gained popularity, with 9,241 young individuals acquiring the card thus far. The government has set aside a budget of €2 million, anticipating around 10,000 beneficiaries. President Christodoulides remarked that the card aims to provide youth with opportunities to delve into culture, stimulate creativity, and cultivate a love for the arts while promoting critical thinking skills.

Young people turning 18 can easily apply for the card through the Bank of Cyprus’ mobile app or in person at any branch. Once issued, the card is valid for one year, empowering a new generation to explore the rich cultural landscape of Cyprus.
