The team, known as RobotHeadz, captivated audiences with their educational game, Artifact GO, which aims to bring Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage to life through technology.
Cypriots: Journey to Sydney
Comprising five boys and five girls, RobotHeadz represented Cyprus at the prestigious event held at Macquarie University from July 9 to 12. Their journey to Australia was made possible after they triumphed over numerous teams during the national competition, securing the national title under the guidance of their coach, Pericles Cheng, and with the support of their families.
Innovative Learning through Gameplay
This year’s championship was themed “Unearthed”, encouraging participants to explore how technology can aid in the uncovering, preservation, and explanation of historical artefacts. RobotHeadz responded to this challenge with Artifact GO, a mobile educational game that turns Cyprus into a virtual excavation site.
Exploring Cyprus’s Archaeological Treasures
In Artifact GO, players select different districts of Cyprus, removing layers of earth to uncover archaeological items that narrate stories from the island’s past. One notable discovery within the game is a Bronze Age juglet, which is linked to Cyprus’s ancient copper trade with Egypt. This connection is further illustrated by the Amarna letters, a collection of diplomatic correspondence dating back to the 14th century BC, which highlight Cyprus’s historical role in international trade.
A New Approach to Cultural Heritage
Through Artifact GO, the team has successfully transformed the way young audiences engage with history, moving beyond traditional museum displays and textbooks. By integrating programming, gaming, digital design, and archaeology, the students created an interactive platform that allows users to delve into Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage.

Cheng noted that the game was developed with scalability in mind and could be adapted for use in other countries, allowing students worldwide to explore their own archaeological sites and historical narratives using the same engaging format.
Achievements and Recognition
RobotHeadz’s participation in the Sydney event was made possible by their impressive performance at the FIRST LEGO League Cyprus 2026 national final, where they received the Champion’s Award, Core Values Award, and Robot Design Award. This marked the team’s third consecutive national title, having previously represented Cyprus in international competitions in Florida in 2024 and Houston in 2025.
Utilising AI for Educational Engagement
To enhance their presentation, the team prepared an AI-generated introductory video that illustrated the concept behind Artifact GO. This video depicted Cyprus as an expansive archaeological site, emphasising how each discovery contributes to a broader narrative concerning trade, diplomacy, and the island’s historical significance.
Ethical Considerations in AI Use
As part of their educational initiative, there are plans for an interview with Cheng and a session focused on understanding the risks associated with generative AI. This will align with the Education Ministry’s guidance, helping students grasp the importance of approaching AI-generated content with caution, especially when it involves personal images, historical facts, and educational material.
Support from the Community
The successful journey of RobotHeadz is a testament to the support provided by a wider network, including the Cyprus Computer Society, which organises the national FIRST LEGO League competition. Their efforts were bolstered by volunteers, coaches, and the backing of the research foundation and the Office of the Chief Scientist.
Engaging with Scientific Heritage
Prior to their departure, the students had the opportunity to meet Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides, where they presented their innovative application. They also showcased various materials highlighting Cyprus’s scientific and cultural contributions, including 3D-printed artefacts and audiovisual content regarding the island’s heritage and national research projects.
Beyond Trophies: A Vision for the Future
RobotHeadz’s achievements extend far beyond the accolades of a national trophy or participation in an international competition. The students undertook extensive research, programmed a functional product, designed and tested a robot, and collaboratively tackled challenges as they emerged.
While the Sydney championship served as a significant platform, the real journey began back in Cyprus, where these ten young individuals explored the intersections of archaeology, robotics, and artificial intelligence.
