Dedicating just a few minutes to learn about CPR can significantly contribute to saving a life, according to Health Minister Michael Damianos. On Tuesday, he unveiled this year’s awareness campaign in advance of World Restart a Heart Day, which is observed globally on October 16. The initiative, started by the Cyprus Resuscitation Council (Kysan), aims to raise awareness about the critical nature of sudden cardiac arrest.
Restart a: Significance of September 16
“This day is not just a date on the calendar,” Damianos remarked, emphasising the urgency of the campaign. He stressed that survival from cardiac arrest can hinge on the actions taken in mere minutes, and that an informed citizen can be the difference between life and death for someone in need.
Statistics on Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Each year, approximately 300,000 cases of sudden cardiac arrest occur in Europe outside hospital settings, which translates to about one incident every two minutes. Alarmingly, around half of these events take place in the presence of bystanders, highlighting the importance of immediate intervention.
Key Actions That Save Lives
Minister Damianos pointed out that recognising a cardiac arrest swiftly, applying CPR without delay, and having access to a defibrillator can significantly enhance survival chances—by as much as two or three times. He underlined that this sequence of actions is more than a theoretical framework; it is a tangible reality that can save lives.
Public Education Initiatives
In light of this, October has been designated as a month for public education on these critical life-saving techniques. The Ministry of Health has set an ambitious goal to inform and train over 10,000 individuals throughout the month. This effort is part of a broader strategy to empower citizens to act decisively in emergencies.
Focus on Defibrillators
This year’s campaign slogan, “YOU CAN…”, highlights the importance of public access defibrillators. These devices, which are essential in emergencies, provide immediate and unrestricted access around the clock. They are strategically placed outdoors in areas that are either remote or have heavy foot traffic, ensuring they are available when needed.
The defibrillators are stored in wall-mounted safes with clear signage for easy identification. To access a defibrillator, callers must obtain a code from the ambulance service, which can be provided when assistance is requested. It is important to note that these devices are to be used exclusively in cases of cardiac arrest when the individual is unconscious and not breathing.
Collaboration for Better Education
Damianos also highlighted the vital role of partnerships in this campaign, particularly with Kysan, which has been a key collaborator for over 20 years. This longstanding partnership has significantly enhanced education in both basic and advanced resuscitation techniques, helping equip more people with the skills needed to respond effectively in emergencies.
