Psychology department: A Strategic Initiative for Academic Growth
Established as part of UoL’s strategic initiative to broaden its academic offerings, the Department of Psychology commenced its journey with the 2024–2025 academic year. This launch includes two initial programmes: the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Psychology and the Master of Science (MSc) in Educational Psychology, with the latter being available through distance learning.

Future Programmes Under Review
Building on this foundational step, the Department is set to introduce four additional programmes that are currently under review by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA). These forthcoming programmes include:
- BSc in Psychology (Distance Learning)
- MSc in Occupational and Organisational Psychology (Theoretical and Applied tracks)
- MSc in School Psychology (Applied)
- PhD in Psychology
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol, was well-attended by esteemed guests, including representatives from the public sector, academia, and diplomatic circles. Deputy Mayor of Limassol, Ira Philippou, took the stage to deliver a welcoming address, emphasising the significance of the new department for the academic and social landscape of the city.
Dr Terpsa Konstantinidou, Director of the Department of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, also lauded the university’s ongoing growth and its contributions to higher education. In his remarks, Professor Theodore Panayotou, Rector of the University of Limassol, shared the institution’s vision for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and making a positive societal impact.
Department’s Vision and Mission
Professor Doron Sonsino, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, elaborated on the Department of Psychology’s role within the broader academic framework of UoL. Dr Kyriaki Mikellidou, Chair of the Department, articulated the mission of the department: to cultivate a new generation of psychologists who are well-prepared to tackle contemporary challenges in mental health and education.
Dr Mikellidou acknowledged the collaborative efforts of faculty, researchers, and administrative staff in bringing this vision to fruition. She stated, “The establishment of the Department of Psychology reflects a shared vision and unwavering support from the university’s leadership and community, laying the groundwork for academic rigor and societal engagement.”
Inaugural Lecture: Bridging Theory and Practice
The ceremony concluded with an inaugural lecture delivered by Professor Jonathan Delafield-Butt, a Visiting Professor of Developmental Psychology. His lecture, titled “Embodied Origins of Mind: Implications for Health and Learning,” provided valuable insights into the relationship between cognitive development, embodiment, and education. This presentation underscored the department’s commitment to addressing pressing issues in mental health and learning.
Aiming for Regional and International Excellence
As the Department of Psychology embarks on this exciting new chapter, it aims to establish itself as a regional and international hub for excellence in psychological science. The department is dedicated to advancing academic innovation, fostering interdisciplinary research, and promoting community engagement.
