The Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) has received a donation of £15,000 (€17,282) from the United Kingdom, enhancing its ongoing mission to identify individuals missing since the intercommunal conflicts in Cyprus.

  • The previous year alone saw the discovery of remains belonging to 23 people, with 12 of them identified: eight Greek Cypriots and four Turkish Cypriots.

This latest contribution increases the UK’s total donations to the CMP to €322,282 since 2004. The CMP expressed gratitude for this support, stating that it has been crucial in enabling the organisation to conduct essential DNA analyses and acquire necessary equipment for its operations in 2026.

In a statement, the CMP remarked, “The continued support of the United Kingdom constitutes a valuable contribution to the CMP’s efforts to identify and return the remains of missing persons, thereby helping to bring closure to families who have endured longstanding uncertainty.”

Established in 2006, the CMP aims to locate and identify a total of 2,002 missing individuals from Cyprus’s past conflicts. So far, the organisation has successfully exhumed 1,714 bodies and identified the remains of 1,065 individuals, which include 301 Turkish Cypriots and 764 Greek Cypriots.

The previous year alone saw the discovery of remains belonging to 23 people, with 12 of them identified: eight Greek Cypriots and four Turkish Cypriots.

Apart from the UK’s generous donations, the CMP also receives support from various international organisations and other nation states. Notably, the European Union contributed €2.6 million in January, further solidifying the collaborative effort to address the painful legacy of the past.
