The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has proposed an ambitious roadmap aimed at transforming Cyprus into a key energy hub for the region and Europe. This initiative comes ahead of UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan’s visit to Cyprus, which has been described as a significant diplomatic milestone.
High-level discussions preceded the President’s visit, indicating the UAE’s deep interest in investing in Cyprus. Government sources have highlighted that the UAE’s commitment to potential projects is both intense and focused.
Energy hub: Strategic Energy Initiatives
Energy cooperation stands out as a priority in the UAE’s investment strategy for Cyprus. A proposal for a Comprehensive Strategic Energy Partnership was submitted, outlining a series of projects designed to enhance energy initiatives. This partnership seeks to position Cyprus as a vital energy hub, facilitating collaboration with the UAE across a range of energy sources, including renewables, natural gas, and storage solutions.
Among the projects identified, the LNG Terminal has been marked as the most developed. The UAE has also expressed interest in engaging with the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and exploring opportunities in AI-enabled data centres and port infrastructure, particularly at Larnaca and Vasilikos.
New Collaborative Framework
During the recent business forum, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established, creating the UAE-Cyprus Joint Business & Investment Council. This council aims to institutionalise cooperation, enhance investment flows, and foster ongoing dialogue between business entities in both nations.
