The visit, initiated by an invitation from Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, took place at the presidential palace in Nicosia and was characterised by discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and cooperation.
The day commenced with a ceremonial welcome at Larnaca airport, where Sheikh Mohammed was greeted with military honours. The national anthems of both nations were performed by bands from the National Guard and the Cyprus police, setting a formal tone for the proceedings.
During the reception at the presidential palace, Sheikh Mohammed laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, a gesture symbolising respect for Cyprus’s history. Key officials from both sides, including Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, were present, underscoring the importance of the meeting.
Following the welcome ceremonies, the two leaders engaged in private discussions before expanding their talks to include delegations from both nations. According to a statement from government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the primary focus of their dialogue was on reinforcing cooperation in several strategic sectors, including investment, energy, technology, trade, education, culture, tourism, shipping, security, and critical infrastructure.
Both presidents underscored the significance of transitioning from strategic alignment to practical implementation. As part of this commitment, they agreed on establishing a joint UAE-Cyprus business council. This council aims to serve as a stable platform for business collaboration, project development, and the creation of a coherent investment pipeline, effectively linking the Cyprus chamber of commerce and industry, Invest Cyprus, and the UAE chamber of commerce federation.
The discussions also highlighted the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins on January 1, 2026. Both leaders viewed this as an opportunity to enhance EU-Gulf relations, particularly with the UAE. The potential for a free trade agreement between the UAE and the EU was also explored, with expectations that it would further broaden avenues for trade and investment.
Throughout the talks, regional and international issues were on the agenda, particularly developments in the Middle East. Both leaders expressed a commitment to humanitarian support for Gaza, pledging to continue aid through all available channels.
President Christodoulides remarked on the significance of Sheikh Mohammed’s visit, describing it as a new chapter in Cyprus-UAE relations. He stated, “This strengthens our strategic partnership, creates operational structures, and sets measurable goals for the future.” Sheikh Mohammed echoed these sentiments, highlighting the advancements made since the establishment of strategic cooperation between Cyprus and the UAE in 2022. He noted that ties have strengthened across various sectors, including energy, industry, trade, investment, tourism, and education.
As the discussions concluded, Sheikh Mohammed welcomed the upcoming Cypriot EU presidency as a means to enhance UAE-EU relations and reiterated the humanitarian responsibilities both countries share concerning civilians in Gaza. The visit culminated in an official luncheon hosted by President Christodoulides in honour of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, further solidifying the rapport between the two nations.
