The Turkish Cypriot community has made a significant donation of €120,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), bolstering efforts to identify and return the remains of individuals lost during the intercommunal conflicts.
Turkish cypriot: Support for Identification Efforts
This latest contribution, made on Thursday, is part of a continuous commitment from the Turkish Cypriot community towards the CMP, which has now received a total of €803,000 since 2006. The CMP relies heavily on donations to fulfil its vital bicommunal mission.
History of the Committee on Missing Persons
The CMP was established in April 1981 under the auspices of the United Nations, following calls from two UN General Assembly resolutions advocating for a mechanism to address the issue of missing persons. The formation of the CMP was a collaborative effort between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, aimed at providing closure to families affected by the conflicts.
Progress Made Since Inception
Since its activation in 2006, the CMP has undertaken the challenging task of locating and identifying a total of 2,002 people who went missing during the events of 1963-64 and the conflict in 1974. As of now, the committee has successfully exhumed 1,707 bodies and has identified 1,057 from the official list, alongside an additional 216 individuals whose remains have been returned to their families for dignified burials.
Demographics of Identified Persons
Among those identified, the CMP reports that 296 were Turkish Cypriots while 761 were Greek Cypriots. This progress highlights the importance of the CMP’s work in fostering reconciliation and understanding between the two communities, as it seeks to address the historical grievances stemming from the conflicts.
Continued Need for Support
The ongoing support from both communities is essential for the CMP to continue its efforts. Donations such as the recent €120,000 contribution play a crucial role in sustaining the operations necessary for the identification and return of remains, which is a deeply sensitive issue for many families.
As the CMP continues its mission, the importance of community support cannot be overstated. Each contribution, whether large or small, helps to ensure that the stories of those who went missing during these tumultuous times are not forgotten and that their families receive the closure they deserve.
Looking Ahead
With ongoing efforts to identify the missing, the CMP remains committed to its goal of providing answers to families who have waited decades for information about their loved ones. The Turkish Cypriot community’s generous donation is a testament to the collective desire for healing and resolution, reinforcing the critical role that such contributions play in the broader context of peace and reconciliation in Cyprus.
