A tree planting initiative took place at the Pournara migrant reception centre, with a total of 115 trees being planted on Friday. This joint environmental effort was led by the deputy migration ministry and aimed to improve the environmental quality of the centre.
The project was executed in collaboration with Reforest Nicosia, a non-profit organisation dedicated to reforestation efforts. Residents of the centre, along with staff and representatives from partner organisations such as EUAA, Frontex, UNHCR, and CODECA, participated actively in this green endeavour.
During the tree planting event, 62 cypress and 53 pine trees were added to the landscape of the centre. Officials noted that this initiative was not just about planting trees; it also served to encourage participation and foster cooperation among those living and working at Pournara.
Technical guidance on species selection and planting preparation was provided by Reforest Nicosia, ensuring the right choices were made for the local environment. Additionally, irrigation materials and the trees themselves were generously donated by Elysee Irrigation Ltd.
The event was designed to be family-friendly, with activities for children organised by Vela Cyprus. Participating residents were also recognised for their involvement, receiving certificates to commemorate their contribution to this meaningful project.
The asylum service highlighted that this marked the first organised tree planting activity at the Pournara centre. Officials expressed gratitude to all organisations involved, acknowledging the collaborative spirit that made the event possible.
