- A total lunar eclipse will occur on 7 September, visible from all over Cyprus. This celestial event offers a stunning opportunity for stargazers and curious onlookers alike.
Timing of the Eclipse
The eclipse will unfold in several stages, beginning with the Moon’s entry into the penumbra at 18:26. However, the event will become particularly noticeable after 19:26 when the Moon starts to enter Earth’s shadow. The total eclipse is set to commence at 20:30, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 21:11. As the phenomenon progresses, the Moon will exit the shadow at 22:56 and the penumbra at 23:56.

Viewing Conditions
The Moon is expected to rise at 19:10, just prior to the eclipse becoming visually striking. As the sunlight is refracted and scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere, the Moon will take on a reddish hue as it moves into shadow rather than disappearing entirely.
Understanding Lunar Eclipses
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned directly between the Moon and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon. Unlike solar eclipses, where the Sun is obscured, lunar eclipses allow the Moon to remain visible, with its surface illuminated by refracted sunlight.
A Community Event at the Observatory
The Faka Tutorial’s Observatory, in collaboration with the Cyprus Astronomical Society, invites the public to observe the eclipse through telescopes at their Nicosia location. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 20:00, with the event lasting until 23:00. This gathering not only promises a view of the eclipse but also of nearby planets through the telescopes.
