Three elderly individuals have been hospitalised with severe heatstroke at Nicosia general hospital, as an ongoing heatwave continues to grip the region. The extreme temperatures pose a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable groups, according to Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the state health services organisation (Okypy).

The patients, comprising a 72-year-old man and two women aged 73 and 90, were admitted with serious heatstroke symptoms after being brought in from their homes. Their condition is described as ‘serious but stable’, with indications of gradual improvement, as reported by their medical team.

In recent days, A&E departments across public hospitals have noted a surge in patients suffering from heat-related issues, including heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn. Most of these cases involve elderly individuals, who, after receiving appropriate medical treatment, are typically discharged.

Charilaou has urged the public to take proactive measures to protect themselves from the heat. He recommends avoiding direct sun exposure, staying adequately hydrated, and consulting a personal doctor immediately if any symptoms of heatstroke appear.

The high temperatures have raised concerns about public health and safety, especially for those most at risk. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, encouraging the community to remain vigilant.
