Blue heart: A Groundbreaking Initiative for Inclusivity
The Blue Heart Café is the first of its kind in Cyprus, launched by the NGO Voice for Autism. This initiative not only employs 10 people with autism but also gives five of them a stake in the business as shareholders. In preparation for their roles, eight individuals have successfully completed a comprehensive training programme tailored to equip them with essential skills for the workplace.

Location and Vision
Situated at 10B Yiannis Kranidiotis Street in downtown Nicosia, the café is designed to serve as a model for social innovation and entrepreneurship. Its mission revolves around fostering an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued. Ellen Georgiou Pontikis, President of Voice for Autism, emphasises the café’s broader goal: “We want to put autism firmly on the map and integrate, support and celebrate our unique community. We’re not just serving coffee; we’re creating opportunities and impacting social change.”
Community and Corporate Support
The establishment of the Blue Heart Café has seen a collaborative effort from various sectors. The Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation is a key sponsor, recognising the importance of this social mission. Founder Andrey Dashin shared, “The Blue Heart Café captured our hearts from the very beginning. It represents a new way forward, a purpose that drives change.” The foundation’s support highlights a commitment to challenging outdated perceptions regarding people with autism and fostering an environment where their talents can flourish.
The Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities has also played a significant role by providing grants to help five individuals with autism invest in the café. This department has supported the training programme, ensuring that participants are well-prepared for their new roles.
Legal and Regulatory Assistance
In addition to community support, the Office of the Commissioner for Cooperative Societies and Social Enterprises has been instrumental in guiding the café through the legal aspects of social enterprise. This combination of governmental and corporate backing has been vital for the project’s success. As the café began to gain traction, more local businesses expressed their desire to contribute, indicating the community’s enthusiasm for the initiative.
Long-Term Sustainability and Partnerships
Local businesses are crucial for sustaining the operations of the Blue Heart Café. ECOMMBX is providing long-term support, focusing on empowerment and social change for individuals with autism. Other partners include WOLT, which is offering delivery services, and iHeart Coffee, donating coffee and expertise. Windstorm Trading has contributed funds for furnishing the café, while Island Oil Holdings continues to support Voice for Autism.
This collaborative effort reflects a growing recognition of the value of social enterprises, particularly in the context of inclusivity and empowerment for underrepresented groups. The café’s profits will be reinvested into expanding training programmes, creating additional jobs, and raising awareness about autism in the community.
Future Prospects and Impact
The Blue Heart Café represents a significant step forward for social entrepreneurship in Cyprus. By employing individuals with autism in an inclusive environment, the café not only provides jobs but also serves as a catalyst for social change. As Ellen Georgiou Pontikis notes, the café aims to create a community where everyone’s abilities are acknowledged and celebrated.
As it prepares to open, the Blue Heart Café stands as a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to support one another. This initiative is more than just a café; it is a movement towards a more inclusive society, advocating for the rights and recognition of individuals with autism.
