The teenager who ran over his friend in Larnaca has been remanded in custody for two days following the incident that left the victim critically injured.
The accident occurred on Monday night when a 19-year-old fell from a moving car driven by another 19-year-old, who had been socialising with friends in the Mackenzie area. At around 11:30 pm, while walking through a car park behind Mackenzie beach, the victim was struck by the vehicle, resulting in severe head injuries.
Witnesses reported that the injured teen had climbed onto the bonnet of the moving car before falling off and hitting his head on the ground. The driver, who had two passengers in the car, was subjected to a breathalyser test, which returned negative results, indicating no alcohol consumption.
Following the incident, friends of the injured teenager rushed him to Larnaca general hospital where he was intubated due to the severity of his condition. He was later transferred to the intensive care unit at Nicosia general hospital, highlighting the serious nature of his injuries.
The police initiated an investigation and initially requested a remand order for the driver, which was initially denied based on the information available at the time. However, as further details emerged, the Larnaca police criminal investigation department took over the case, leading to a reevaluation of the circumstances surrounding the event.
Authorities have indicated that the driver is suspected of causing grievous bodily harm and acting irresponsibly, which has raised concerns about the conduct of young individuals who are often involved in such incidents.
