- Strong winds led to a significant incident in Larnaca, where a large tree was uprooted near the Metropolitan Church, causing power outages and damaging several parked vehicles.
The tree, situated in the yard of an abandoned property, fell onto power lines managed by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). This resulted in the collapse of multiple utility poles, severely disrupting electricity supply in the area.

According to Christina Papadopoulou, an EAC spokesperson, one of the fallen poles landed directly on a parked car, causing extensive damage, while other vehicles were affected by debris from the tree and poles. “The tree initially fell on electricity authority cables, causing the poles to collapse,” Papadopoulou stated, adding that EAC crews were swiftly dispatched to address the situation.
Emergency services responded promptly to the incident. Police were on-site to manage traffic diversions around the affected area, ensuring safety for both motorists and pedestrians. Meanwhile, the Fire Service deployed units as a precaution against potential fire hazards arising from the fallen power lines.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the tree collapse, which occurred amid strong intermittent winds that have been affecting Larnaca. Fire Service officials confirmed that, as of 2pm, there were no other wind-related incidents recorded in the district.
As EAC engineers work diligently to restore electricity to affected residents, the authority has yet to provide a timeline for when power will be fully restored. Meanwhile, Larnaca Municipality crews are tasked with clearing the fallen tree from the roadway, ensuring that traffic can resume as normal.
