  • A private security guard at Ypsonas Third Primary School suffered facial burns after being attacked with lit flares by a group of youths on Monday evening.

The assault occurred between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. when the youths entered the school grounds, specifically targeting the mini football pitch. In an effort to remove them, the guard confronted the group, which resulted in them chasing him. During this altercation, the youths threw the lit flares at his face, causing serious burns that required hospital treatment.

School supervisor Christina Tryfonos provided details about the incident, stating, “The youths entered the school premises and specifically the mini football pitch that is located within the school grounds. The private guard tried to remove them, with the youths chasing him. Subsequently, the perpetrators threw lit flares at his face, causing him burns.”

The injured guard was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was treated for second-degree burns on his face. His condition highlights the alarming rise in violence associated with vandalism at schools in the area.

West Limassol School Board President Herodotus Neophytou condemned the attack, labelling it attempted murder. He expressed deep concern over the increasing frequency of vandalism in schools, asserting, “Last night’s incident is attempted murder. We are not simply talking about an incident; the man suffered second-degree burns to his face. They tried to kill him.”

Neophytou urged the police to take more accountability, stating that there is enough evidence to identify the assailants. He also pointed out that vandalism had escalated in recent weeks, referencing an incident at Ypsonas Gymnasium just a week prior. “Parents of the offenders bear responsibility, as does the police. What are they waiting for? To mourn victims?” he questioned.
