As the election date approaches, Demetriou accused her political opponents of sidestepping significant national issues, leaving voters in uncertainty about their positions. “With only a week remaining before voters go to the polls, several parties and candidates have failed to present clear proposals on the Cyprus issue and other key political matters,” she declared.
Framing the upcoming elections as a critical moment for the nation’s values, she articulated her concerns about the increasingly toxic political climate. “On the Cyprus issue, we do not play games, we do not invest in false hopes, we do not flatter ears,” Demetriou stated firmly.
She reiterated Disy’s commitment to a solution concerning Cyprus that avoids the presence of occupying troops, guarantees, and invasive rights. “True patriotism means fighting for a free and safe homeland,” she argued, distancing her party from what she termed as ‘cheap slogans’ and divisive narratives.
Critiquing the current tone of political discourse, Demetriou noted that some factions are promoting “toxicity, screams, fake news, division and unsubstantiated accusations.” She lamented the trend of reducing politics to mere spectacle. “Some are trying to turn politics into a spectacle,” she continued, highlighting the danger of prioritising impressions over substantive debate. “Politics for us is responsibility.”
Demetriou urged supporters to recognise that the elections transcend mere parliamentary representation; they are pivotal for the country’s future direction. “Will we move forward with stability and reforms, or will we return to toxicity, anger and destabilisation?” she questioned, challenging her audience to consider the implications of their votes.
In a bid to engage younger voters, she addressed claims that Disy has lost its appeal among the youth demographic. “We have been hearing a lot lately that Disy supporters are tired, that the party is ageing and that young people have moved away from politics,” she remarked, asserting that now is the time to counteract these narratives.
