The number of registered unemployed reached 10,924 persons at the end of November, according to figures released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service (Cystat). This marks an annual decrease of 163 individuals, or 1.5 per cent, compared with November 2024.
Despite this annual decline, seasonally adjusted data revealed an increase in unemployment figures, rising to 10,078 persons in November from 9,723 in October. Cystat indicated that this fluctuation follows the usual seasonal pattern observed in adjusted data.
Sector-Specific Trends
According to the report, the reduction in registered unemployed stems from fewer job seekers in key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, trade, and financial and insurance activities. Additionally, there has been a decrease in newcomers entering the labour market.
High Unemployment Areas
The breakdown of registered unemployment figures reveals significant concentrations in specific sectors. The accommodation and food service activities had the highest number of unemployed individuals, totalling 3,642. This was followed by wholesale and retail trade with 1,569, transport and storage with 611, and professional, scientific and technical activities with 813.
Other notable figures included administrative and support services (543), public administration (594), and manufacturing (458). In contrast, the lowest unemployment was recorded in mining and quarrying (9 persons), activities of households (10), extra-territorial organisations (12), electricity and gas supply (7), and water and waste management (18).
Understanding Registered Unemployment
Cystat noted that registered unemployment covers individuals aged 15 and over who are able, available, and actively seeking full-time work through District Labour Offices. This classification excludes self-employed individuals, part-time job seekers, and those seeking work with specific employers.
