Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to the role of journalists and the independence of the media. He stated that every citizen has the right to be informed in a manner that is free, pluralistic, and reliable.
In his remarks, Letymbiotis highlighted the challenges posed by the modern age, where speed, misinformation, and technological change dominate public discourse. He stressed that in such an environment, the importance of free and responsible journalism becomes paramount. Democracy, he asserted, requires oversight, critique, research, and diverse viewpoints.
“It needs journalists who can work without fear, without pressure, without threats and without institutional obstacles,” Letymbiotis emphasised. He reassured that the Republic of Cyprus, governed by the rule of law, is dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to journalistic integrity.
This environment, he elaborated, encompasses transparency, access to information, respect for dissent, and the safeguarding of press officials. Continuous efforts to enhance institutional guarantees that uphold freedom of expression are crucial in this respect.
Letymbiotis also noted the government’s recognition of criticism as an essential element of a functioning democracy. He remarked that constructive disagreement, supported by evidence and responsibility, enriches public discourse, leading to a more informed citizenry and a robust democracy.
However, he warned that this responsibility comes with the duty to protect the truth from distortion and combat misinformation. “The answer to these challenges is more transparency, more accountability, more institutional maturity,” he concluded.
On this day, Letymbiotis paid tribute to all those who contribute to the dissemination of information with professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility.
