Stronger eu: Unity and Cooperation at the Heart of Europe Day
On Saturday, President Nikos Christodoulides celebrated Europe Day, highlighting the need for the European Union to enhance its cohesion and competitiveness. In his address, he underscored the significance of the day, stating, “Today is a day of profound importance because it reminds us of the fundamental values of unity, cooperation and solidarity that define our common European project.”

The Role of Youth in Europe’s Future
Addressing an audience of children and young adults at the presidential palace, Christodoulides stressed that young people are crucial in shaping Cyprus’ role within the EU. He stated, “Quite simply, to build the Europe we envision and deserve, we need young people who think critically, innovate, work together and respect diversity within a multicultural environment.” This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of the potential of the younger generation to lead the way in addressing contemporary challenges.
Geopolitical and Technological Challenges Facing Europe
As part of his remarks, the president pointed out the ongoing EU Council presidency of Cyprus and the various geopolitical challenges currently confronting Europe. He noted that these challenges, along with rapid technological changes, present “major challenges” to security, competitiveness, and democratic stability. In this context, he mentioned the need for an autonomous and independent Union that is open to the world, which he linked directly to the education system.
Emphasising Educational Initiatives and Mobility
Christodoulides referenced key European initiatives such as Erasmus and other mobility programmes that facilitate the free movement of people and ideas. These initiatives, he argued, are essential for participation in the EU and for shaping Europe’s future. “Europe is part of our daily lives. It is the tangible opportunities you have to study, work, travel, settle and create without borders or restrictions,” he remarked. He contrasted this with his own experiences growing up before Cyprus joined the EU.
New Scholarships Announced for Future Generations
In a bid to further support education, the president announced 93 new scholarships for the 2026–2027 academic year. These include four full scholarships and 89 partial scholarships offered by several universities, including the University of Cyprus, the University of Nicosia, Frederick University, the University of Limassol, UCLAN University, and Neapolis University in Paphos. He described these scholarships as “practical proof of our European identity” and confirmed that they would be available to both Cypriot and other European students.
Acknowledging Collaborative Efforts in Education
Expressing gratitude, Christodoulides thanked rectors and representatives of the university institutions for their contributions to the scholarship programme. He stated, “I would like to warmly thank rectors and representatives of university institutions for granting scholarships and for their presence here, for the fact that their vision for Cyprus coincides with our vision for our country, for Europe.” This collaboration is seen as vital for fostering a sense of European identity among students.
Reinforcing the Importance of EU Integration
Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos echoed the president’s message in a recent post on X, asserting that “The European Union is the answer to the challenges of our time.” He referenced the Schuman Declaration, which serves as the foundation of European integration, noting that 76 years have elapsed since its inception in the aftermath of the Second World War. Kombos remarked, “They bequeathed to us the idea of European integration, economic cooperation and political partnership.”

As Europe Day celebrations conclude, the emphasis on youth, education, and cooperation remains a clarion call for the future. The vision articulated by Christodoulides highlights a collective ambition for a stronger, more cohesive European Union, one that prioritises the needs and contributions of its younger citizens while navigating the complexities of modern geopolitical landscapes.
