Authorities have opted for Limassol as the venue for the trial, despite the alleged offences occurring in Paphos. This decision, according to sources, is based on factors that justify moving the case away from the mayor’s home district.
The formal indictment is currently being finalised by the Police Prosecution. Once complete, Phedonos will be summoned to receive the charges in writing, as confirmed by police press officer Christodoulos Konsolos. Following this, the Registry will schedule a hearing in Limassol District Court, where bail conditions are anticipated to be established to ensure his appearance before the three-judge panel.
The allegations against Phedonos date back to 2014, beginning with a report of rape that caught public attention two years later. In a dramatic revelation on state broadcaster CyBC, Paphos businessman Theodoros Aristodimou publicly named Phedonos, labelling him a “rapist and blackmailer.” Aristodimou further challenged Phedonos to pursue legal action for defamation, asserting his readiness to substantiate the claims in court.
Phedonos provided investigative testimony as a suspect on 18 February. However, he chose not to respond to the investigators’ questions directly, opting instead to submit a written memorandum outlining his position broadly.
The upcoming court proceedings will not only address the serious nature of the allegations but will also draw significant public attention given Phedonos’s position as a mayor. The case underscores the gravity of the accusations and the legal implications that come with them.
