This state-of-the-art equipment, valued at over €274,000, was generously donated by the “One Dream, One Wish” association.
The cytogenetics laboratory at Makarios hospital has been operational since 1980, providing critical genetic testing linked to infertility, miscarriages, and congenital diseases. The recent addition aims to significantly bolster the laboratory’s diagnostic capabilities.
Dna analysis: Enhancing Diagnostic Capabilities
Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides described the donation as “an essential milestone for health services.” He highlighted that the new automated system would not only accelerate complex procedures but also improve clinical diagnosis and disease management. Notably, haematological cases, which constitute approximately 60 per cent of the laboratory’s sample workload, are expected to benefit significantly from this advancement.
International Partnerships and Quality Assurance
Minister Charalambides also emphasised the laboratory’s international collaborations and its accreditation status. He stated that the laboratory participates in external quality control programmes and works closely with specialised laboratories in Greece, Spain, and Italy, establishing itself as a reliable reference facility for public health.
Community Support and Impact
The “One Dream, One Wish” association, which supports children with cancer and their families, funded the purchase and installation of the new equipment. Charalambides expressed gratitude to the organisation for what he termed “an act of substance, responsibility, and social sensitivity.” He noted that this donation not only supports laboratory operations but also has a direct impact on patients and healthcare professionals.
“It supports timely and reliable diagnosis. It supports healthcare professionals in their work. It supports patients and their families at the most critical moment,” he remarked, reinforcing the importance of such advancements in healthcare.
