murder trial — murder trial — The suspect in the murder of 26-year-old Alexandros Antoniou will face trial in Paphos this Thursday. The 58-year-old man, who has been in custody at the central prison in Nicosia, is set to be transferred to Paphos for the continuation of his trial, which is scheduled to start at 9am.

The incident that led to this trial occurred in the village of Konia on November 19. Allegedly, an argument between the suspect and Antoniou escalated outside a kiosk, resulting in the horrific stabbing of the victim. Witnesses reported that the confrontation turned violent when the suspect brandished a knife and inflicted multiple wounds on Antoniou before fleeing the scene.

Antoniou was rushed to the Paphos general hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later. Following the incident, the suspect was apprehended on the same day and later re-arrested on murder charges after Antoniou’s death.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect claimed that he acted out of emotional turmoil, citing prior issues between Antoniou and his daughter, who had been in a relationship with the victim. Prosecution lawyer Sotiroula Papalazarou has stated that police have gathered testimony indicating that the two men were engaged in a heated exchange. According to reports, Antoniou asked the suspect, “What do you want? What did I do?” to which the suspect retorted, “Did you hear what I told you? Leave her alone.” This exchange underscores the personal nature of the conflict that led to the tragic outcome.

Defence lawyer Elias Stefanou previously argued that the suspect’s intention was not to target a vital part of Antoniou’s body during the altercation. The court has ordered that the suspect remain in custody throughout the trial proceedings, citing concerns regarding the risk of non-appearance.

This trial marks a significant moment for the community of Konia, as residents grapple with the implications of such violence in their neighbourhood. The case has drawn attention not only for its tragic nature but also for the underlying personal disputes that escalated into a fatal confrontation.
