It is Europe’s responsibility.”

Metsola expressed optimism about the potential for progress, stating, “There is a sense that progress is possible.” She highlighted the importance of political support and confidence-building measures, stressing that a continuous focus from Europe is vital for fostering trust and reconciliation between the two sides on the island. Further reinforcing her dedication to the cause, Metsola stated that the European Parliament will persist in working towards the reunification of Cyprus under the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation. Last year, Metsola described an enlarged meeting focused on the Cyprus problem as a significant step forward. Metsola noted, “This parliament stands resolute in supporting the United Nations-led process, because we know that dialogue and diplomacy are the only path to a lasting solution.”

In May of the previous year, Metsola visited Cyprus, a trip she described as a message of commitment to the country. During her visit, she met with President Nikos Christodoulides, expressing gratitude for his leadership and efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. “The European Parliament always stands by your side,” she assured Christodoulides.
EU’s Increasing Role in Cyprus Affairs
The European Union has become increasingly active regarding the Cyprus issue in recent months. This includes the appointment of Austrian diplomat Johannes Hahn as the bloc’s envoy for the Cyprus problem last May. Since taking on this role, Hahn has visited the island twice, engaging in discussions with both President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.

During a recent visit, Hahn remarked on the potential for positive change, stating, “After so many difficult times, I believe that now there is an opportunity.” He highlighted the importance of establishing a good relationship between Christodoulides and Erhurman, which he views as essential for resuming negotiations and achieving a comprehensive solution.
