livadia oroklini — livadia oroklini — €50 million is being invested in the development of Livadia and Oroklini districts in Larnaca, according to Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras. This significant financial commitment will see the implementation of six key projects throughout the year, all aimed at enhancing sustainable mobility and improving community infrastructure.
Livadia oroklini: Focus on Sustainable Mobility
Mayor Vyras emphasised that around €20 million of the total budget will be dedicated to priority projects outlined in Larnaca’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. This includes plans to create 11 kilometres of dedicated bus lanes and cycle paths, as well as upgrading over 15 main roads, which will span a total of 30 kilometres.
Redesigning Urban Spaces
The proposed designs aim to rearrange junctions and implement various measures such as converting streets to one-way, reducing vehicle lanes on major roads, and planting trees to create green corridors. Additionally, the reconstruction and completion of sidewalks are part of the initiative, fostering a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Investment in Education
Another significant component of the development plan is the allocation of €13 million for the construction of facilities for the School of Marine Sciences and Sustainable Development at the Cyprus University of Technology (Tepak). This new 4,960-square-metre complex will be situated near the Mackenzie parking area and will host auditoriums, classrooms, conference and meeting rooms, as well as specialised laboratories and advanced IT infrastructure.
Municipal Service Relocation
Plans also include relocating Larnaca municipal service offices to the site of the former Larnaca hospital. A budget of €9 million has been set aside for the restoration and maintenance of existing buildings, some of which are listed. This initiative will involve the demolition of non-listed structures and the construction of new facilities to consolidate municipal services at a single location.
Enhancements to Local Infrastructure
As part of the improvements, the works will encompass the design of surrounding outdoor spaces, creating a public square, a green area on the southern side of the complex, and a parking area to the north, as stated by Vyras.
Renovation Projects in Livadia
The municipality has also earmarked €3.6 million for the renovation of Archbishop Makarios III Avenue in Livadia. This project will feature new paving for roads and sidewalks, the installation of public utilities, and the replacement of the water network. Improvements will also be made to rainwater drainage and sewage systems, along with upgrades to church courtyards, lighting, and parking spaces.
Preserving Oroklini’s Historic Centre
In Oroklini, a project costing €2.4 million will focus on restoring the road network in the historic centre. This initiative aims to improve accessibility and safety, particularly for individuals with disabilities, in accordance with European standards. The project is particularly crucial in areas where limited road width hampers the separation of traffic flows.
Renovating Cultural Landmarks
The sixth project involves the renovation of the Ayios Ioannis church, with an estimated cost of €2.3 million. The works aim to highlight the architectural, urban, historical, social, and environmental significance of the Ayios Ioannis area. Planned enhancements include constructing a central square, upgrading existing roads, widening pavements, and planting new trees to enrich the local greenery.
Implementation and Oversight
All six projects will be executed by the department of public works, ensuring that the developments align with the municipality’s vision for a sustainable and improved urban environment. Mayor Vyras expressed optimism about the potential benefits these initiatives will bring to the community, reinforcing the importance of sustainable infrastructure in Larnaca.
