- A 63-year-old life prisoner was found dead in his cell at the Central Prisons on Friday afternoon, prompting a swift investigation by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Prison staff discovered the inmate unresponsive at approximately 15:55. Despite immediate medical intervention on-site and his subsequent transfer to the Nicosia General Hospital A&E, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Initial reports indicate a suspected cardiac arrest as the cause of death. However, authorities have mandated a post-mortem examination, scheduled for late Friday evening, to ascertain the exact cause of death and to rule out any possibility of foul play.
The Prisons Department has confirmed that the inmate’s family was notified immediately following the incident. A spokesperson from the department stated that they are “fully cooperating” with the investigating officers as they delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the death.
This tragic event marks the second death in custody within a span of less than two months. The previous incident involved a 23-year-old foreign national who died under similar circumstances in December 2025.
