  • Kittens have mysteriously disappeared from the exterior of a supermarket where they had been cared for by animal lovers for years, according to the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation.

These kittens were not just strays; they were neutered and regularly fed and watered by volunteers in the community. However, a troubling report has emerged that an individual was seen trapping the kittens and placing them in a car.

“As we learned from social media posts and related testimonies, an individual has been observed trapping the kittens and placing them in a car,” the movement stated. This alarming revelation has led to concerns about not just the fate of these specific kittens but also about similar disappearances at other supermarkets.

On Saturday, those concerned reported the incident to the Animal Police, who reportedly contacted the individual involved. However, the Movement of Ecologists expressed frustration, stating, “the claims made appear to be unsubstantiated, as the kittens continue to be missing from their location.”

As of Wednesday, five days have passed with no sign of the missing kittens, leaving volunteers distraught. “Volunteers are in despair as the cats continue to be missing, causing intense feelings of anger and anxiety about their fate,” the movement added.

Under current legislation, the abandonment or release of an animal under human care is prohibited, highlighting the seriousness of this situation. The movement has called upon the police to take immediate action to locate the individual involved, investigate the incident thoroughly, and return the cats to their familiar environment. They have also urged authorities to look into reports of similar disappearances from at least two other supermarkets in the area.

“We demand the police take all necessary actions to locate the specific person, fully investigate the incident, return the cats to their location, and investigate the reports of cat disappearances from at least two other supermarkets,” the statement read.

In an appeal for public assistance, the movement has encouraged anyone with information about the matter to contact the police. “Unfortunately, yesterday, whilst citizens intended to provide information about the case, the Animal Police did not answer their calls,” they noted, pointing to ongoing challenges in communication with the Animal Police.

This issue, they argue, is not isolated. The Movement of Ecologists has reported widespread complaints regarding the operational effectiveness of the Animal Police across Cyprus. They plan to address these concerns with a meeting request to the new Justice Minister.
