beach safety — British Bases police have confirmed that their summer beach safety operation in Cyprus successfully maintained low crime levels despite attracting over 600,000 visitors to Lady’s Mile and Kourion beaches.
The three-month initiative, known as Operation Guardian, ran from June to August and saw an enhanced police presence during weekends and holidays. Officers were deployed across 19 different locations, actively patrolling to deter criminal activity and ensure public safety.
Akrotiri Assistant Chief Police Officer Melina Papagrigoriou expressed pride in the professionalism and dedication of the officers throughout the operation. “The data reflects our strong commitment towards public safety during one of the busiest periods of the year,” she stated.
As part of their efforts, police conducted inspections on 498 boats and carried out 96 alcohol tests, with 50% of those tested yielding positive results for drink-driving. In addition, officers made 53 arrests and issued 257 warnings for various traffic violations, further demonstrating their proactive approach to community safety.
“Through high-visibility patrols and coordinated law enforcement, Operation Guardian not only addressed road traffic and maritime risks, but also reassured the public and deterred criminal activity in busy recreational areas,” Papagrigoriou added.
