Interest in recruitment for contract soldiers in the National Guard is increasing, with recent reforms enhancing pay and career prospects. Despite this surge, a notable number of vacancies remain unfilled.
Rising Applications Amid Reforms
The current application period for contract soldiers, which closes on 13 July, has seen a modest rise compared to previous cycles. This increase is attributed to recent measures implemented to strengthen and upgrade the National Guard, aiming to make military service more appealing to potential recruits.
Impact of Previous Recruitment Practices
Despite the positive trend, the image of the recruitment scheme has suffered due to past challenges, particularly related to low salary levels and limited opportunities for career advancement. These factors have historically deterred potential candidates, but recent changes are designed to address these issues.
Enhanced Salary and Promotion Structures
Under the new framework, contract soldiers are now placed on salary scale A2, with the potential for additional allowances and promotions up to scale A8. The Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has confirmed that examinations for contract officer positions have already been conducted, with the first promotions of contract soldiers anticipated within the year.
Monthly Allowances for Contract Soldiers
To further enhance the attractiveness of the role, monthly allowances have been introduced. All contract soldiers will receive an additional €150 per month, while those serving in elite or specialist units, such as Commandos, Underwater Demolition Teams, mine clearance units, and medical support roles, will benefit from a higher allowance of €250.
Broader Changes to Recruitment Conditions
Recent governmental decisions have introduced significant changes to the recruitment conditions, tenure, and career progression for contract soldiers. Notably, the maximum recruitment age has been raised from 27 to 35, and the service limit within the National Guard has been extended from 42 to 57. These changes are intended to provide greater stability and longevity in military careers.
Future Adjustments to Pension and Retirement Benefits
In addition to these reforms, alterations are planned regarding pension and retirement benefits. Service as a contract soldier will now be recognised for those transitioning into contract non-commissioned officer roles, further incentivising long-term service.
Active Recruitment Campaign
The Defence Ministry is actively pursuing candidates for vacant or soon-to-be-vacant positions, encouraging eligible applicants to submit their applications. The recruitment process is exclusively online through the government portal, which will remain open from 25 May to 13 July 2026 at 14:00.
Application Process and Requirements
Candidates must be registered and verified users of the government portal to apply. Following the submission of applications, prospective recruits will need to participate in a physical fitness assessment and strength tests. Examinations are slated for July, with candidates notified via email and text message regarding their participation.
Looking Ahead
As the recruitment window approaches its close, the increased interest in contract soldier positions reflects a positive shift in perceptions of military service within Cyprus. With improved pay structures and career opportunities, the National Guard is poised to attract a new generation of soldiers eager to serve their country.
