  • A wildfire has broken out in the Trachoni area of Limassol, prompting a swift and coordinated response from local firefighting forces and British bases personnel.

On Saturday afternoon, the fire service mobilised teams to tackle the blaze, which was reported to be consuming dry grass and wild vegetation. Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis confirmed the scale of the response, stating, “We responded with firefighting forces from Limassol district. Civil Defence and organised volunteer groups have also been activated.”

To aid in extinguishing the fire, support came from a fire engine provided by the British bases, alongside two excavators and a portable firefighting unit from Kourion municipality. These resources were crucial as the teams worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

Initial investigations into the cause of the fire point towards a possible incident involving a lorry that came into contact with overhead electricity cables belonging to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC). This detail highlights the potential hazards present in the area, particularly during dry conditions.

As the afternoon progressed, firefighting efforts remained intense, with teams actively working to contain the flames. The situation underscored the importance of community cooperation and the vital role of multiple agencies in responding to such emergencies.
