The ‘Imagine’ peace education programme will resume for the 2025–2026 school year, addressing anti-racism and promoting peace among students. This initiative, announced by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), comes after a period of uncertainty regarding its future.

AHDR has confirmed that a circular enabling the programme’s activities has been published, paving the way for schools to engage with the initiative in the forthcoming academic year. The programme, which began in 2017 under the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Education, has been pivotal in fostering interaction between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot students and educators.

Imagine: Promoting Understanding and Non-Violence

Designed to cultivate a culture of peace and non-violence, the ‘Imagine’ programme has successfully involved over 8,200 students and approximately 2,500 educators since its inception. Implemented by AHDR in collaboration with the Home for Cooperation, the programme has also received backing from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, highlighting its international significance.

Concerns Over the Programme’s Future

At the beginning of the current school year, the absence of an official circular raised significant concerns regarding the programme’s continuation, effectively halting participation during school hours. This uncertainty prompted political reactions and calls for clarification on the programme’s status. AHDR maintained its readiness to continue once participation was confirmed, demonstrating their commitment to the cause.

New Applications Open for Schools

As the 2025–2026 academic year approaches, the application process for schools is now open. Groups of students from lower secondary, upper secondary, and technical schools are encouraged to apply. Teachers interested in participating can complete an application form distributed to schools. Following approval from school management, submissions can be made via the designated email address included in the circular.

The return of the ‘Imagine’ peace education programme not only reinstates an essential educational initiative but also reinforces the ongoing commitment to fostering understanding and cooperation between communities in Cyprus.
