  • The health ministry has issued a call for the responsible use of non-prescription medication, highlighting the need for patients to be vigilant about their health choices.

On Wednesday, as part of an EU-wide initiative, the ministry underscored the importance of using non-prescription medicines wisely, particularly those intended for mild health conditions such as pain, fever, or colds.

“These [non-prescription] medicines are intended for mild health conditions, such as pain, fever or colds. However, no medicine is without risks,” the health ministry stated, urging the public to adhere to the guidance provided.

Patients are reminded that incorrect or irresponsible use of over-the-counter medications can lead to unpleasant side effects and, in some cases, addiction. “That is why it is important – as with any medicine – to read the package leaflet carefully and follow the instructions,” the ministry added.

This campaign targets everyone who occasionally uses non-prescription medications, including common items like painkillers, nasal sprays, and cough syrups. The health ministry aims to raise awareness about the potential dangers of misuse and to encourage informed choices.

While Cyprus is actively participating in the European Medicines Agency campaign, local health professionals have indicated that there are currently no significant issues regarding the misuse of over-the-counter medications. The local pharmaceutical association has reassured the public, stating, “As the first medical experts that patients turn to [for non-prescription medication], we clearly want to raise awareness; however, currently we do not face particular issues in that direction.”
