According to reports from the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris Postasi, the arrest took place on Thursday as authorities monitored the suspect’s activities. The police discovered the cannabis inside a plastic bag that had been left at a containers site.
The operation was part of a wider investigation into the man’s activities, which had been under surveillance for some time. Authorities reportedly examined the suspect’s mobile phone, uncovering evidence of his involvement in transporting narcotics. It is alleged that he made multiple trips to the north, moving a total of eight kilograms of drugs over a three-month period.
In a swift judicial response, the suspect appeared before a court, where a judge ordered him to remain in police custody until his trial.
This case has drawn attention due to its connection with the bi-communal technical committee on crime, a collaborative effort between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot experts. Established under UN auspices, this committee aims to build trust by addressing shared criminal issues such as drug trafficking and cybercrime, facilitating the exchange of information, and enabling the transfer of suspects.
