Cyprus is regarded as the most important element of Greek foreign policy, according to Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis. During a recent address to the Greek parliament, Gerapetritis articulated that the island remains the immediate and major priority of Greece’s national foreign policy, emphasising, “It will never be abandoned.”
Renewed Efforts for Resolution of the Cyprus Problem
The Foreign Minister highlighted the resumption of informal discussions regarding the resolution of the Cyprus issue, which had been stagnant since the 2017 Crans-Montana conference. Gerapetritis noted that these discussions have already yielded positive results, specifically pointing to the election of pro-reunification candidate Tufan Erhurman as the Turkish Cypriot leader in October 2022. He stated that Erhurman’s election “opens a new chapter of hope and expectations for the island’s reunification.”
Framework for Reunification
Gerapetritis stressed that any reunification must adhere to the resolutions established by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. He believes that such a resolution will ensure peace and prosperity for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, integrating them within the European family. “We look forward to working together on the next step in the upcoming informal meeting in a broader format,” he added. He emphasised that “divisions have no place in the modern, turbulent international landscape”, advocating for Cyprus to convey a universal message of synthesis and unity.
Upcoming Meetings and Diplomatic Engagements
In anticipation of renewed dialogue, UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected to return to Cyprus later this month. She plans to meet with both Erhurman and President Nikos Christodoulides. Following this, an enlarged meeting is set to occur, involving representatives from Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom, along with UN officials. Erhurman has previously expressed that this meeting “should not be held without prior agreements on certain issues in Nicosia,” indicating the complexity surrounding the negotiations.
Honouring a Significant Figure in Cypriot Politics
Apart from discussions on Cyprus, Gerapetritis confirmed his attendance at the funeral of the late Cypriot president George Vassiliou in Nicosia. He remarked on Vassiliou’s significant contributions to politics, noting that he “left a very strong mark.” This acknowledgment underscores the ongoing political changes and the importance of legacy within the context of current negotiations.
Trilateral Cooperation and Regional Developments
On another front, Gerapetritis is set to travel with his Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos to Egypt for a trilateral meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. This meeting follows their previous tripartite discussions held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2022, where they reviewed trilateral cooperation concerning security, energy, and shipping. The advancement of energy projects, particularly the construction of an electricity interconnecting cable from Cyprus to Greece and the export of liquefied natural gas to Europe through Egypt, remains a focal point for these discussions.
Importance of Energy Initiatives
The energy initiatives are critical as Cyprus seeks to strengthen its economic ties and enhance energy security in the region. The collaboration between Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt reflects a growing strategic alliance aimed at addressing regional challenges and fostering economic development.
Looking Ahead
As Cyprus navigates its complex political landscape, the emphasis on diplomatic dialogue and cooperation remains crucial. The ongoing efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and the strengthening of regional partnerships will play a significant role in shaping the future of the island and its people.
