In a significant decision, Attorney General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides have announced their recusal from evaluating the Independent Authority Against Corruption’s report related to Mafia State. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to maintain objectivity in a case that has captured public attention.
In a recent statement, Savvides indicated that he had reached out to Transparency Commissioner Haris Poyiadjis to inquire about the timeline for the complete report and its appendices. Poyiadjis informed him that the documents would not be ready for submission before the upcoming Monday.
Given the public interest surrounding the matter, the Law Office decided to announce its decisions without awaiting the report’s arrival. Savvides explained that his decision to abstain stems from his personal relationship with former President Nicos Anastasiades, ensuring that the process remains free from bias.
Similarly, Deputy Attorney General Angelides has opted to follow suit, prioritising impartiality in the evaluation of the report. The Director of Criminal Law at the Law Office, Elena Kleopa, will also step away from the process due to her previous role as a witness before the Authority inspectors concerning a specific aspect of the case.
In light of these developments, an extraordinary Prosecutorial Council has been convened by the Attorney General. This council, composed of senior officials from the Law Office, will take charge of reviewing and managing the report once it is received from the Independent Authority Against Corruption. They will also be responsible for any further necessary measures or decisions.
