german tourist — 2025 has proven to be a landmark year for the tourism industry in Cyprus, with German tourist arrivals reaching unprecedented levels, according to Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis. After nearly three decades, the island has recorded its highest number of visitors from Germany.
- Koumis concluded by affirming the importance of a successful year for tourism businesses in Cyprus, stating, “A year that gives them the right to acquire coveted economic resilience.”
During a recent visit to the Christmas market in Statos-Ayios Fotios, Koumis highlighted the significance of this achievement. He noted that Germany has long been a dominant force in outbound tourism globally, making this record particularly noteworthy for the Cypriot tourism sector.
Previously, the high point for German visitors to Cyprus was back in 1997, when arrivals peaked at 250,000. This year marks a significant turnaround, as Koumis expressed that “for the first time, we broke the record of the German market.” This resurgence is attributed to concerted efforts to enhance air connectivity between Germany and Cyprus, making the island more accessible than ever.
“The most important thing is that German visitors are keen to explore various areas of our country,” Koumis remarked, emphasising the diversification of tourism benefits across Cyprus. The deputy ministry of tourism aims to ensure that the positive impacts of this influx are felt throughout the entire island.
The year 2025 has also seen a notable increase in overall tourist arrivals, growing by 12 per cent compared to 2024 and an impressive 40 per cent over the past three years. Koumis stated, “We have exceeded all precedents in relation to tourism revenues,” highlighting the economic significance of this growth for local businesses.
On a broader scale, Cyprus has been recognised for its advancements in air connectivity. A report from the Aviation Council International ranked Cyprus first in improving air links in 2025 compared to the previous year and second when looking at progress from 2019 to 2025. Additionally, Cyprus leads Mediterranean countries in terms of revenue growth during the first half of the year.
Furthermore, the island has experienced the largest increase in overnight stays in tourist accommodations when comparing 2024 to 2023. This positive trend offers hope for long-term economic stability within the tourism sector.
