The Game Fund warden has become a target in what is being described as an alarming wave of attacks against wildlife protectors. Trade union Isotita reported that a 46-year-old warden’s personal vehicle was set ablaze by criminal elements in Yeroskipou, Paphos, completely destroying it.
This incident occurred around 3.40am on Monday, underscoring the increasing danger faced by those tasked with safeguarding the natural resources of the country. Isotita has labelled these attacks as part of an “undeclared war that rages uncontrollably,” expressing grave concerns for the safety of its members.
Union’s Strong Condemnation
In a stern statement, Isotita condemned the violence against wardens, emphasising that tolerating such acts equates to complicity in the repeated victimisation of those who protect the environment. The union articulated that frontline workers are caught between “ruthless criminal circles” and “the ‘Trojan horses’ within the service,” referring to individuals who may be undermining efforts to combat crime.
Longstanding Safety Concerns
Isotita has raised alarms regarding the precarious situation for its members, stating that complaints and requests for safety measures have been pending since 2019. The union described the authorities’ response as lacking urgency, with “indifference prevailing and procedures moving at a snail’s pace.”
Call for Immediate Action
The union is now advocating for immediate police training and the institutionalisation of 24-hour self-defence measures for wardens. They have also called for the establishment of an anti-poaching unit, staffed by incorruptible officials, along with the creation of operational protocols, which they claim are currently non-existent.
Game Fund Under Pressure
In its statement, Isotita painted a bleak picture of the Game Fund’s current state, likening it to “a ship that is taking on water from everywhere and is being driven to the rocks due to the irresponsibility, carelessness and criminal obstruction of those responsible.” The union accuses the administration of being more focused on scheduling changes than addressing the pressing issues at hand.
The situation has become increasingly dire, as the union’s pleas for support continue to go unheeded. As the threat to wildlife wardens escalates, the need for effective measures and a response from authorities has never been more urgent.
