Foreign missions in Cyprus are sounding the alarm about a global rollback in LGBT rights. In a joint statement released on Friday, 26 diplomatic missions and European institutions based in Cyprus called on the nation to advance a national equality strategy during its presidency of the EU Council.
Lgbt rights: Concerns Raised Ahead of International Day Against Homophobia
The statement, issued by the Cyprus chapter of Diplomats for Equality, coincided with the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. The signatories expressed deep concern about increasing restrictions targeting LGBT communities worldwide. These restrictions include attempts to limit freedom of expression, curtail inclusive education, and hinder the activities of civil society organisations.
Pride Marches as Platforms for Dialogue
“Pride marches remain essential platforms for dialogue, solidarity, and the affirmation of universal human rights,” the statement noted. It highlighted the ongoing bans and obstacles that affect such events internationally, underlining the importance of these gatherings for the LGBT community.
Cyprus’s Role in Promoting Equality
The missions welcomed Cyprus’s recent election to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and emphasised its current EU Council presidency as a key opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion. They urged the Cypriot government to adopt a national LGBT strategy, which is reportedly in its final stages.
Support for Local LGBT Organisations
In their statement, the diplomats praised the contributions of local LGBT organisations such as Accept – LGBTI Cyprus, Queer Cyprus Association, Rainbow Families Cyprus, Queer Wave, and Queer Collective. They also acknowledged the efforts of university LGBTQ+ groups and members of the Cypriot LGBTQ+ diaspora, recognising their vital role in advocating for rights and inclusivity.
Encouraging Workplace Equality
The diplomatic missions further encouraged employers in Cyprus to introduce equality-based workplace policies and diversity training programmes. Such initiatives are seen as essential steps in fostering an inclusive environment for all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Participation in Cyprus Pride Month Activities
As part of their commitment to advocating for LGBT rights, members of the Diplomats for Equality network plan to participate in marches in Nicosia on Sunday and June 6, contributing to the celebrations for Cyprus Pride Month 2026.
A Broad Coalition of Support
Among the signatories of the statement were the Australian, British, and Canadian High Commissions in Cyprus, as well as embassies from France, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. The European Commission representation in Cyprus and the European Parliament office in Cyprus also added their support to the declaration.
The joint statement reflects a growing concern about the state of LGBT rights globally and highlights the important role that nations like Cyprus have in promoting equality and safeguarding human rights.
