EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Presidential Palace in Cyprus on Wednesday. Zelenskyy arrived first, receiving a ceremonial welcome with a red carpet laid out at the palace steps. He was soon joined by von der Leyen and Costa, creating a moment of unity before their discussions commenced.
Focus on Ukraine and EU Cooperation
The quadrilateral meeting was centred around the ongoing situation in Ukraine, with President Nikos Christodoulides expressing the importance of the day. He stated that Cyprus is ready to collaborate effectively during its presidency semester, aiming for an autonomous EU that embraces global openness.
Christodoulides highlighted the necessity for the EU to maintain cohesion in the face of international challenges. Coordination between Cyprus and the European Council, led by Costa, is expected to be a priority, ensuring Europe’s strategic autonomy and resilience.
Broader Regional Discussions Planned
Following the quadrilateral meeting, Christodoulides is anticipated to hold a bilateral discussion with Costa to further address European priorities. The agenda also includes a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, focusing on stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and enhancing cooperation with the Southern Neighbourhood.
Celebrating the Presidency Launch
The official opening ceremony of Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency is set to take place later in the evening at the Theatre Organisation of Cyprus Main Stage. Von der Leyen and Costa are expected to attend, alongside other notable leaders including Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid.
