- The discovery of a charred body inside a burnt-out car in Liopetri has prompted an extensive investigation by British Bases police, who are currently keeping all lines of inquiry open.
The body was found early on Monday morning in a vehicle belonging to a 77-year-old man from Xylofagou, who had been reported missing since the previous day. The police received a call at 9am from a member of the public who spotted the burnt vehicle near the Liopetri fish farm.
Upon arrival, officers found the vehicle completely destroyed and the remains unrecognisable. DNA samples have been taken from the charred body for identification purposes, as authorities await results that could provide clarity on the individual’s identity.
In a statement released on Wednesday, British Bases police described the investigation as “complex”. They emphasised that no lines of enquiry have been ruled out while evidence is collected and assessed. The police further urged the public to refrain from speculating as the investigation unfolds.
As part of the ongoing efforts, fire service units and the British Bases Criminal Investigation Department were called to the scene to assist in the examination of the burnt vehicle. A number of items of evidence were collected for scientific analysis, which may help in determining the cause of the fire.
As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, reflecting on the unsettling nature of the incident. Local residents are encouraged to provide any information that may be relevant to the case, as police work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic discovery.
