The incident occurred earlier this week when the driver ventured onto the muddy marsh, an area protected under environmental regulations. According to the environment department, the hefty penalty was issued to deter such actions that threaten the fragile ecosystem.
Larnaca salt: Concerns Over Environmental Impact
Environmental officials have expressed alarm over the potential damage caused by the vehicles, particularly as migratory birds, including thousands of flamingos, return to the area for the winter season. The Larnaca salt lake, designated as a Natura 2000 protected site, is critical for various bird species that rely on its unique habitat.
Plans for Vehicle Recovery
Efforts are currently underway to safely remove the stranded vehicles without exacerbating the situation. Officials are evaluating the vehicles’ weight and dimensions to determine the most appropriate recovery method. They are considering whether to utilise resources from the army, police, or fire service, all while prioritising the minimisation of environmental disruption.
A spokesperson from the environment department noted, “The priority is to minimise environmental impact. We must ensure any recovery method causes the least possible disturbance to the birds and the habitat.”
Enforcement of Access Restrictions
Local police confirmed that one vehicle had driven into the shallow edge of the lake and subsequently became trapped. A second vehicle attempted to assist but ended up stuck as well. In light of this incident, the Larnaca municipality reiterated that vehicle access to the salt lake is strictly prohibited. Plans for additional signage and increased patrols are being discussed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
