traditional lace — traditional lace — The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU has unveiled its official logo, deeply inspired by the traditional Lefkara lace. President Nikos Christodoulides presented the design on Sunday, highlighting how the intricate patterns of this craft embody a vision for a more autonomous Europe that draws strength from unity.

Traditional lace: Threads of Unity and Meaning
The newly revealed logo features 27 distinct elements, each symbolising one of the EU member states. These interlocking components reflect the craftsmanship of Lefkaritika, a textile art recognised by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of Cyprus. President Christodoulides remarked that the thread “symbolises the unity of the EU and our great goal for an even more autonomous Europe, open to the world.”

This metaphor extends further, as the Presidency described the thread as fragile when isolated, yet robust and cohesive when woven together. This philosophy illustrates the transition from theoretical ideals to a resilient, harmonious collective.
A Palette of Symbolism
The logo, crafted by graphic artist Marios Kouroufexis, integrates specific cultural and political identifiers that resonate with both Cypriot and European identity. Warm orange tones represent the Mediterranean sun and the copper hues of the Cypriot flag, while the deep blue background underscores Cyprus’s integral role within the European family.
The circular arrangement of the elements suggests a shining sun, reinforcing Cyprus’s position as a bridge between various cultures and regions. This thoughtful design aims to communicate a visual commitment to the values the presidency seeks to promote.
Visions for a Stronger Europe
During the logo’s presentation at the Lefkara Conference Centre, President Christodoulides shared a vision for a robust and resilient Europe. He emphasised the Presidency’s commitment to advancing the European Union across critical sectors, such as security and defence, competitiveness, fiscal stability, and the green and digital transitions.
The logo serves as more than just an emblem; it is a visual representation of the goals of cooperation, solidarity, stability, and deepening integration that will guide the Cyprus Presidency. The intertwining threads of the logo reflect the foundational principles necessary for the EU to flourish in an increasingly complex world.
