gaza peace — gaza peace — Cyprus’s invitation to participate as an observer in the upcoming US-led Peace Council meeting on Gaza has been hailed as a significant step by President Nikos Christodoulides. Addressing the media on Sunday following a celebratory service for Saint Maron at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Graces in Nicosia, Christodoulides expressed his satisfaction with the invitation, underscoring its importance for the island nation.

The President noted that this opportunity allows Cyprus to highlight its strategic plan for Gaza, which was a key factor in receiving the observer status. He recalled presenting this plan during his recent visit to Egypt, where he discussed three specific aspects related to the American president’s broader initiative.

As a member state of the European Union situated closest to Gaza, Cyprus finds itself in a unique position to contribute meaningfully to the discussions. Christodoulides stated, “The United States coming forward with an invitation specifically for observer status shows the US desire for cooperation to work together, always in relation to implementing the American president’s plan for Gaza.” This collaboration is seen as vital for Cyprus, which has a vested interest in the region’s stability.

On the matter of attendance, the President indicated that either he or the Foreign Minister would represent Cyprus at the meeting. He is currently in discussions with other Mediterranean leaders to confirm attendance, stating that Italy and several other nations have responded positively to the invitation, although he refrained from disclosing specific details about other countries.

Christodoulides elaborated on the significance of the observer status, explaining that it is focused on strengthening efforts for Gaza. Cyprus had previously submitted a plan aimed at humanitarian assistance and rebuilding, reinforcing its commitment to the region’s peace and stability. He pointed out that Cyprus’s decisions are guided by the primary criterion of serving its national interests, with this participation aligning with those goals.

Reflecting on recent events, the President recalled that Cyprus was the first country to launch a humanitarian initiative, the Amalthea initiative, in response to the humanitarian crisis following the terrorist attacks in October 2023. This initiative underscores Cyprus’s proactive approach to humanitarian issues and its role in the broader context of Middle Eastern geopolitics.

During his statements, Christodoulides reaffirmed that as the Republic of Cyprus, there exists a responsibility to contribute towards the implementation of the American president’s plan, which is hoped will lead to lasting peace in the region. He described the invitation to join the Peace Council as not only an honour but also a pivotal moment for Cyprus to assert its role as a mediator and supporter of peace initiatives in the Mediterranean.
