Cyprus struggle: Common Challenges and Solidarity
During his address, Kollias emphasised the unity between Greece and Cyprus, particularly in facing common international challenges. He stated that the most significant and enduring challenge is the Turkish occupation of Cyprus. The ambassador highlighted, “Cyprus has the full and unwavering support of Greece in its national cause.” This statement underlines Greece’s commitment to standing alongside Cyprus as it navigates its ongoing struggle for sovereignty.
Call for National Unity
Kollias stressed the importance of national unity and solidarity, declaring these to be the nations’ greatest assets in their fight for freedom. He expressed Greece’s ongoing support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and the Cypriot government to resume negotiations that had previously been suspended. “In this joint effort, Greece remains your steadfast ally, your sincere and selfless supporter,” he remarked.
Pursuing a Just and Sustainable Solution
The ambassador called for a “just, sustainable and functional solution” that aligns with UN resolutions, Security Council decisions, and EU principles. He articulated the need for a resolution that would liberate Cyprus from the “unacceptable situation of occupation” and the “outdated system of guarantees and intervention rights.” This reflects a broader goal not only for political resolution but also for the welfare of all individuals residing on the island.
Honouring Historical Significance
‘Oxi Day’ commemorates the day in 1940 when Greece rejected the Axis powers’ demand for entry into its territory, marking a significant moment in World War II. In his speech, Kollias reflected on the historical importance of this day, noting that it serves as a symbol of unity and resilience for both nations. He stated, “This anniversary is one of the threads that bind our past with our present.”
Cyprus’ Contribution During World War II
The ambassador also took time to recognise the significant role that Cyprus played during World War II. He noted that many Greek Cypriots, defying the colonial regime that ruled the island at the time, actively participated in the war effort. More than 20,000 individuals enlisted in the Cyprus regiment, and numerous Cypriots lost their lives fighting for freedom and dignity. Their sacrifices are commemorated in military cemeteries across 17 countries, serving as a testament to their commitment.
Commitment to Reunification
Kollias assured that Greece continues to collaborate with the Republic of Cyprus towards the goal of reunification. He emphasised that the common struggle for a settlement remains ongoing, stating, “This struggle will remain unwavering for as long as the occupation persists.” His remarks underline the enduring bond between the two nations and their shared vision for a peaceful and united future.
Reflections on History and Its Lessons
In concluding his address, Kollias remarked on the value of history in shaping contemporary understanding. “History is always useful,” he said, “But it becomes truly valuable when, reflecting on yesterday, it helps illuminate today.” This perspective encourages both nations to draw strength from their shared past as they forge ahead in their fight for justice and freedom.
The ceremony on October 28 served as a poignant reminder of the enduring relationship between Greece and Cyprus, highlighting their mutual commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by the current geopolitical landscape.
