Total petroleum product sales in Cyprus reached 118,460 tonnes in January, marking an 11.2% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).
Petroleum product: Surge in Marine Gasoil Demand
A notable rise was observed in marine gasoil provisions, which skyrocketed by an impressive 175.3% during this period. This surge highlights a significant shift in demand for marine fuels, reflecting broader trends within the maritime industry.
Aviation Sector Growth
The aviation kerosene sector also saw substantial growth, with a recorded increase of 23.2% compared to January 2025. This uptick in aviation fuel consumption suggests a rebound in air travel as economies recover and travel restrictions ease.
Heating Gasoil and LPG Sales Increase
Demand for heating gasoil surged by 25.2%, indicating a robust need for heating solutions during the colder months. Additionally, sales of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) rose by 13.4%, while asphalt sales grew by 13.2%. These increases demonstrate a steady demand for energy products across various sectors.
Decline in Light and Heavy Fuel Oil
Conversely, the sales of light fuel oil experienced a sharp decline, falling by 62.3%. This drop was accompanied by a 12.1% decrease in heavy fuel oil sales, suggesting a potential shift towards cleaner energy sources or changes in consumer preferences.
Minor Changes in Diesel and Gasoline Sales
Road diesel sales saw a slight decline of 1.6%, while motor gasoline sales remained relatively stable, with a marginal increase of 0.3%. These figures indicate a level of steadiness in the wider automotive fuel market.
Filling Station Sales Growth
When examining sales from filling stations specifically, the figures show a positive trend, with a 3.5% increase, resulting in a total of 58,500 tonnes sold. This rise suggests that consumer confidence in fuel purchasing remains strong.
Monthly Sales Trends
On a month-on-month basis, total petroleum product sales in January 2026 recorded a fall of 3.9% compared to December 2025. This decrease aligns with typical seasonal fluctuations seen in petroleum sales.
Aviation Fuel Sees Monthly Decline
In particular, aviation kerosene provisions dropped by 10.0% on a monthly basis, reflecting the cyclical nature of air travel demand. Additionally, both motor gasoline and road diesel witnessed more pronounced monthly declines, falling by 13.1% and 11.9%, respectively.
Marine Gasoil’s Resilience
In contrast, the provisions of marine gasoil continued their upward trajectory with a monthly increase of 15.6%. This resilience indicates an ongoing commitment to marine fuel supply amid changing market conditions.
Significant Stock Decrease
At the end of January 2026, total stocks of petroleum products recorded a significant decrease, falling by 33.0% compared to the quantities held at the end of the previous month. This reduction in stock levels may reflect the increased sales activity and changing consumption patterns across the market.
