He emphasised that this militarisation endangers both sides of the island, highlighting a shared vulnerability that transcends political divides.
Pointing to the increasing military presence on the island, he referenced assets from various nations, including Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, alongside British bases and the Andreas Papandreou air base. Erhürman noted that the presence of these forces has consequences for tourism and the economy, as concerns over regional conflicts arise and foreign media portray Cyprus as an unsafe destination. According to him, this negative perception was a predictable outcome of the current military dynamics.
The Turkish Cypriot leader also alluded to a past statement by former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, which was cited in an article by Niyazi Kizilyurek. Samaras had suggested that had the Annan Plan been implemented, it would have prevented Greece from deploying military assets to the island. Erhürman used this reference to underline the historical context of Cyprus’s security challenges.
In his closing remarks, Erhürman stressed the need for a resolution to conflicts in the region, asserting that Turkish Cypriots should not be held accountable for decisions made without their involvement.
