Artificial intelligence: Strategic Framework for AI Adoption
At the centre of the discussions was the creation of a strategic cooperation framework designed to support the secure, responsible, and innovative adoption of AI across society, the economy, and the public sector. The officials explored practical methods for collaboration, particularly focusing on the implementation of the European Union’s AI Act.
Developing Implementation Playbooks
Another significant topic was the proposed development of an AI Act Implementation Playbook. This initiative aims to provide guidance on how to effectively integrate AI regulations within existing frameworks. Additionally, they discussed organising joint technical meetings and roundtables with ISO/IEC experts, which would bring international expertise in AI governance and recognised standards into Cyprus’ preparations.
Future-proofing Against Emerging Challenges
Beyond regulatory measures, the meeting also addressed initiatives intended to future-proof Cyprus against emerging challenges in AI and cybersecurity. Strengthening the country’s digital resilience is a crucial goal, allowing for robust responses to potential threats.

Pieris highlighted the close connection between AI and cybersecurity, describing them as interconnected pillars of Cyprus’ digital transformation. He emphasised the importance of cooperation among all stakeholders to create a secure, resilient, and trusted digital ecosystem.

Skourides stressed the need for closer links between research, innovation, government, and industry. By fostering collaboration in these areas, Cyprus can unlock AI’s full potential, thereby enhancing its competitiveness, productivity, and sustainable growth. He also noted the necessity of aligning these efforts with European values, transparency, and internationally recognised governance standards.
Introducing the AI Team
Following the discussions, Pieris introduced the Office’s AI team to the Chief Scientist. This extension of the meeting from policy discussions to include the individuals responsible for turning proposed cooperation into joint initiatives in AI, cybersecurity, and digital governance was seen as a positive step forward.

The two sides agreed to continue their dialogue through regular and structured working meetings. Their shared objective remains clear: to advance innovation, strengthen digital resilience, and ensure that AI is utilised in Cyprus safely and trustworthily.
