Cyprus is prepared for a potential Ebola case, as confirmed by epidemiologist Petros Karayiannis, who emphasised the country’s established protocols to manage such infections. Speaking to CNA about the alarming outbreak in Central Africa, he reassured the public that Cyprus has successfully implemented these measures in the past and stands ready to activate them again if necessary.
Protocols and Immediate Response
In the event of an imported case, Karayiannis stated that the immediate priority would be the isolation of the suspected patient. He highlighted the importance of implementing strict biosecurity measures to safeguard healthcare professionals and the general population from any potential spread of the virus.
Understanding Ebola Transmission
Karayiannis explained that Ebola is transmitted only through close contact with bodily fluids, including saliva, tears, urine, faeces, and blood. He noted that outside Central Africa, where outbreaks are more frequent, cases would likely be imported, necessitating heightened vigilance.
Screening Measures for Arrivals
“This is where we need to be cautious,” he continued, stressing that individuals arriving from affected countries should undergo thorough screening regarding their travel history and previous locations visited to assess potential exposure risks.
Severity of the Current Outbreak
Karayiannis remarked on the seriousness of the current outbreak, indicating that the strain responsible for it has caused previous outbreaks and is associated with a more aggressive form of the disease. He further noted that, as of now, there is no vaccine available for this specific strain; treatment primarily focuses on managing symptoms.
Emphasis on Prevention
At this stage, prevention remains the most critical strategy in combating the disease. The health ministry’s permanent secretary, Elisavet Constantinou, reiterated this sentiment, stating that the ministry is continuously updating its response strategy based on the evolving situation.
Collaboration with Health Authorities
Constantinou confirmed that Cyprus is adhering to all relevant procedures outlined by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). She added, “We went through all previous procedures and made some changes,” reflecting the proactive approach being taken to safeguard public health.
