Among the eagerly awaited debuts is the legendary violinist Boris Belkin, recognised as one of the great violin virtuosos of modern times. He has performed with leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic.
Stars of the Festival
Also making his festival debut is Anton Sorokow, an Austrian violinist with a distinguished career as First Concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Renowned cellist Claudio Bohórquez, known for his performances in major venues around the world, will also join the festival.
Returning favourites include celebrated violinist Elly Suh, acclaimed for her interpretations of Paganini, and versatile violinist and violist Yura Lee, whose career has garnered extensive praise for both technical prowess and emotional depth. Cellist Jing Zhao, respected for her expressive artistry, will also return to the stage.
Highlighting Cypriot Musical Talent
This year’s festival also places significant emphasis on Cypriot talent, showcasing musicians who are making notable strides on the international classical music scene. Pianist Christos Fountos returns following his success at the prestigious Busoni International Piano Competition, establishing himself as an accomplished soloist and chamber musician.
Emerging Artists on the Global Stage
Another prominent Cypriot presence is bassoonist Mavroudes Troullos, who has received acclaim across Europe for his sensitivity and expressive playing. Troullos’ growing recognition positions him among the leading bassoonists of his generation.
“Supporting Cypriot musicians has always been central to the work of the foundation,” Costaki remarked. “It is incredibly rewarding to see local artists building international careers and then returning to perform here alongside some of the greatest musicians in the world.”
A Celebration of Chamber Music
The festival commenced on Friday and will feature a total of six inspiring chamber concerts at the Royal Manor House until Thursday. Each evening presents a unique programme, highlighting masterpieces by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, and Dvořák. Notable pieces include Beethoven’s Septet, Schumann’s Piano Quintet, and Brahms’ String Quintet No.2.
Exploring Lesser-Known Works
Additionally, the festival invites audiences to explore rare gems by composers like Frank Bridge, Sergei Taneyev, Alfredo D’Ambrosio, and Josef Suk. A highlight will be soprano Anush Hovhannisyan, renowned for her dramatic interpretations and powerful stage presence.
A Grand Finale in a Unique Setting
The festival will conclude with a spectacular gala concert at The Olive Grove in Delikipos, the Pharos Arts Foundation’s open-air concert venue, surrounded by ancient olive trees and a serene Mediterranean landscape. The gala will feature a side-by-side performance by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Yiorgos Kountouris.
The programme for the gala includes Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, with Finghin Collins as soloist, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 performed by Boris Belkin, and Shostakovich’s vibrant Festive Overture.
“The closing gala concert perfectly reflects the spirit of the festival,” Costaki noted. “It brings together internationally acclaimed soloists, professional musicians, and young performers in a celebration of artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.”
